Tropical Storm Debby

posted: August 6, 2024, 12:41 PM

We have cancelled Turtle Talk and Children's Turtle time scheduled for this week (Wednesday 8/7) due to the impending storm. There are two more Turtle Talks scheduled for Wednesdays August 14 and 21 at 7 p.m. at the Holden Beach Chapel.

We've had several questions about what we'll do for the turtle nests during the storm. This is one of those times when we have to let Mother Nature do her thing. For the safety of our volunteers, we will not be on the beach if the weather is dire. While the nests are still marked, we have taken our loose equipment off the beach.

Rest assured, we have the GPS coordinates of all of our nests, and each nest is marked with hurricane stakes to help us find them if needed. Once all is cleared and it's safe to go back on the beach, we will be back out there assessing the status of nests.

We have only had one new nest in the past two weeks and the last sighting of a momma turtle was on Friday July 26. If we have two complete weeks without signs of a momma turtle on the beach, we will officially declare the nesting season over for this year. We currently have 62 nests.

In the meantime, nests have been hatching to the delight of patrol members and visitors on the beach.
Please remember if you see a sea turtle on the beach to call our 24/7/365 Stranding team number 910 754 0766. If you're on the beach during the storm and do see some turtle activity, please call this number and advise us. Please be safe out there.
