Almost record breaking year

posted: July 28, 2013, 10:09 AM

The ATV rider found two more nests on the beach this morning. This brings the total turtle nests on Holden Beach to 63 (so far). This is the second highest number in the HBTP's history. The most nests we've had was 73 in 1998. We estimate that we have a couple more weeks of potential nesting, so we may beat that record! So far no nests have hatched. But nest #2 has a "depression"...so any day now. We expect several nests will hatch this week. These photos are of the mother's crawl early this morning and the pit that she left when laying nest #62. Patrol members moved 129 eggs from this nest. It is expected to hatch around September 15.
