NOW 50 % more nests than last year!

posted: August 1, 2012, 10:36 PM

It’s a good turtle season in North Carolina....As of July 31 we had 45 nests on Holden Beach. That’s 15 more than last year.

We’re not the only beach that has more turtle nests this year. According to Matthew Godfrey from the Sea Turtle Project @ the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, as of 31 July, there were 953 loggerhead nests reported statewide. Based on seasonal data from previous years, about 90% of all the nests in a season are laid by 31 July. Therefore, assuming this pattern remains constant for 2012, we should receive about 1058 loggerhead nests in NC by the end of this season. There has been only one year on record with more nests: in 1999, there were 1140 loggerhead nests recorded in NC.
Of course, we won’t know for sure how many nests we will get until the season is over, but it looks like 2012 will be one of the biggest years on record. There are also had 18 reported green turtle nests, 5 leatherback nests and 3 Kemp’s Ridley nests in the state.
